Hazel St. Germain Grange was born in Wisconsin and orphaned at a young age. She won honors in high school, but college was out of the question. She took jobs in factories, restaurants, and her sister's boarding house. She married Wallace Byron Grange, who became Wisconsin's first Superintendent of Game, then a co-operative agent for the U.S. Biological Survey. In 1932 the couple moved back to Wisconsin to realize Wallace's dream of opening a wildlife farm. Grange currently lives in Calio, North Dakota.
