To put it bluntly, Mafia 2 is a title, like many others, that strives to achieve the open world nature and abilities of Grand Theft Auto. Whilst the game does not meet up to the pre-defined standard, it certainly does a mighty fine job nevertheless. The 40's/50's setting of the game is brilliant, providing a refreshing change of the storyline taking several years as opposed to other games in the genre which provide an experience over a short period of time in the game's world. The game even attempts to be genuine to the period it is set in, with finer details such as clothing, cars and houses/ apartments showing genuine detail to the era. Even the map showing your location and desired destinations of Empire Bay look vintage. The game's portrayal of certain issues from the era, such as workplace relations, complete lack of political correctness and lack of supply of everyday items are also to be highlighted amongst the game's features. Although Mafia 2 certainly does have it high points, the game is occasionally let down by some underlying factors. Empire Bay itself is rather small, especially in comparison to other open world towns we had experienced in previous years (such as Liberty City from GTA 4). Aside from the storyline itself, there aren't a terrible lot of other intriguing side notes that encourages you to explore the city whilst not on mission, with the only exception possibly being some of the interactions the townspeople have with each other. Keep an eye out for these whilst playing, they may provide a laugh. This game definitely comes recommended, even if it may pale in comparison in some respects to other games in the genre.Read full review
