Excerpt from Parochial Work The issue of a second edition of Parochial Work induces me to make a few remarks on the present condition of things around us. We are on the verge of a solemn crisis; and we should ascertain how far adherence to private judgment and party-spirit may have misled us hitherto. The English Church has at this moment to work upon a most difficult field; hut it belongs to her of right. One of her chief difficulties lies in the fact of her being counterworked by many freer bodies. The Roman communion especially has attempted to take advantage of her fettered condition, magnifying the differences between the English Church and itself, while many among us have been too much inclined to obliterate them.
