Diggy Lawson is ready to have the year of his life. He's entering 8th grade with his sights set on winning Grand Champion at the Minnesota State Fair with his new steer Joker. Everything changes, though, when his classmate Wayne Graf arrives at Diggy's house having been abandoned by his dad who, following the death of Wayne's mother, claims that Diggy's dad Pop is Wayne's real father. Diggy's own mother abandoned him and Pop when he was just a baby. Neither boy is pleased when Wayne moves in and they often butt heads. However, through raising steer calves to show at the State Fair 4-H competition, the boys eventually learn what it means to be 'brothers.
