Excerpt from The Bonaparte-Patterson Marriage in 1803: And the Secret Correspondence on the Subject Never Before Made Public In explanation of the communication from Col. Jerome N.Bonaparte and Mr. Charles J. Bonaparte which appears below, the Publisher of this book deems it expedient to say a few words. The facts so far as kwn in the case of the marriage of Jerome Bonaparte to Miss Patterson in 1803, have so long been matters of history, that when the author came into possession of the complete correspondence on the subject, he did t feel that in making it public, he should be doing other than contributing to a portion of history about which a good deal had been already written. Out of courtesy to Mde. Bonaparte, who is still living, he sent to her, through a friend, the proof sheets of the greater part of the work, and the design of the book was fully explained to her. Mde. Bonaparte made objection to its issue, saying, that the publication of the volume was a matter of perfect indifference to her.
