Additional information
Despite the conceit implied in the title The Complete Jazz Collection, this budget-priced four-disc set is loaded with classics from well-established artists ranging from Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, and Glenn Miller. These instrumental tracks are balanced by the inclusion of just as many by legendary vocalists, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Lee Wiley, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Mel Tormé, Bing Crosby, and many others. The set is completely cross-licensed from a number of different labels as well as eras, from the early '40s through the early '60s. The way this collection is curated and sequenced makes no apparent sense to the naked eye, though such a complaint is counterbalanced by its generally fine sound and the sheer number of absolutely classic performances, such as the amazing version of "Rockin' Chair" by Armstrong with Jack Teagarden, Davis' "My Funny Valentine," Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul," and literally dozens more. The only truly bizarre inclusion is the single "Tequila," by the Champs! A whopping 80 tracks are included here, all of them career-defining. For the cash, this is a terrific set to add to the shelf. ~ Thom Jurek
