At forty-three, Susan Hawke is forced to reinvent her life after a bitter divorce. With three children and very little help from her ex-husband or family, she finds herself juggling two jobs just to keep her head above water. Just when she seems to have found a comfortable groove, she receives a Facebook message from the alumni director of the college in Switzerland she attended in the early eighties. Within minutes, Susan is back in touch with Garrett Kessler, her first love. The memories of their poignant years together come rushing back as the two get reacquainted through text messages, e-mails and phone calls. Susan is forced to work through her past and present feelings - to understand why the relationship didn't work out all those years ago, and to decide if it might be worth a second try. The Long Engagement is a story about choices and regrets, and how we often live our lives to please others instead of trusting and following our own hearts. It will force its readers to ask themselves the question: what would you do if you had a second chance at first love?
I grew up in the ex-pat community of ARAMCO, in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where I was exposed to many different nationalities and where I began my love affair with travel. The experience fostered a curiosity about the world that I hope will come through in my writing. I like to write about flawed characters who are searching for meaning and purpose in their lives. Like them, I want to understand the why of this thing we call life. I prefer to read stories along the same lines, stories that make me think and feel and that ultimately stretch the boundaries of my beliefs.
