With Triple Eight Racing co-drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup hungry for a third successive victory at Bathurst, it was the Holden Racing Team VE Commodore of Garth Tander and Mark Skaife that took pole position for Sundays race. But in a horror start for HRTs lead car, Tander jumped early and then stalled, relinquishing his advantage and copping a 10-second penalty to add insult to the injury. James Courtney set the early pace with Craig Lowndes and Will Davison in hot pursuit, while HRTs slide continued as Skaife got acquainted with the wall at Forrests Elbow. With co-driver David Besnard behind the wheel, a helpless Courtney could only watch on as his BF Falcon slowed with a tyre problem, and Jamie Whincup took full advantage of their misfortune. By the time Lowndes was back in the drivers seat, the gap to Steven Richards in second was comfortable as a pack of faster cars led by Greg Murphy and Courtney struggled to get past Richards slowing FPR Falcon until the final laps. Lowndes crossed the line two seconds ahead of Murphy, recording his fourth Bathurst victory and the third successive triumph on The Mountain with Whincup, a feat last achieved by Peter Brock and Larry Perkins between 1982 and 1984.
