A most satisfying version of a much recorded opera
This is a classic account of this popular opera, with some of the most beautiful voices of the 50's and 60's. Bergonzi's Manrico is sung with his signature Verdian slancio and his voice is in top form. Bastianini here in 1962, was to live only a few more years before he succumbed to cancer. His voice remains big, bronze and impressive. One of the trully great voices of the post war years. Fiorenza Cossotto is Azucena, her beautiful liguid mezzo ringing out with a provocative youthfulness. Antonietta Stella is the Leonora. She was justifiably one of the most popular lyric spintos of her generation. The great Tullio Serafin is at the podium and he leads an exciting production in wonderful recorded sound.
