TOM PETTY IN A NUTSHELL FOR EVERYONE

Even if you aren't the biggest Tom Petty fan, if you like rock, you will like this greatest hits compilation. It's a bit more than that: it includes the FM AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) hits that he built his reputation on. All of the great singles are here also: Breakdown, Refugee, You Got Luck, Mary's Brand New Dress. The quality of this cd is unmatched: Petty has arguably the best backup band members since Bob Seger. The Heartbreakers, due to their immense playing talent, get invited to play studio recordings on other stars albums, such as Bob Dylan. This is one of the 80's bands that did not stink! They keep their sound intact and well preserved into the 2000's.

This CD is easily obtained and makes a GREAT present for around $3 used
and around $8 new (not including shipping.)

One of a kind; so dyed in the wool California.

I kept an identical CD of this around for what seemed like forever. I listened to it often and LOVED so much about it, including what I was to learn LATER of HOW it came about and the effort, upheaval and turmoil that went into its production.

Then, one day, it was gone.

I would 'jones' for the entire album after catching an occasional song on radio that was a publicly popular piece.

Years later, or, just recently, I acquired another one. OMG, it was old home week for me! Reunited at last!
What an album: exuding, hammering and BLASTING OUT the genre & nuances that have indelibly become CALIFORNIA over the decades. Like when I delicately feel over a significantly tangible artifact or antique from a past era gone by, or lands half a world away, drawing from it the feelings, the moods, the attitudes of that land or that time.
So, is this album: drawing me so near to that time and place, yet so far; as I lavish in its rhythmic episodes, overcome by the very feelings that created it, the angst and the changes, the pity, the anger, the lost and lonely, the loves lost forever.
So stark at times, with no turning back but to turn to salt for doing so. Other times so quickly giddy, so silly and surreal that I lose my sense of reality, becoming enveloped in the music turned to mystical springlike colors, of Tickseed, Henbit flower, Catmint flower and the beautiful blue Asian Dayflower.
When fully unseated, unhinged and completely enraptured by the songs of this one-of-a-kind CD, my emotions are so moved by it that I feel as though I am crying with smiles, smiling and laughing with tears of sadness, loss, yet the understanding that comes with experience and back-against-the-wall empirical knowledge, when one concedes, acquiesces, and realizes how fate, or even the happenstance of just naturally being in a particular place during a certain time, to be loved to the hilt, hated for what it is, but for certain: to never be revisited, as time waits for no one. With these songs I am at times whisked back to the nostalgic smells of my seasonal youth: of wet snow, a mountain water fall, the blowing fahn, a sluggish turbid stream immediately following a deluge, even cold dark shadows when I was certain nobody was there, and that I had nobody, nothing, that no one cared and so pragmatically, nothing mattered.
Thank you, gang, for all your hard work. I can only be vicarious to this, to youse, but that I WILL be, and consider it more than enough to satisfy me. May God bless you all, those you love and whom love you as well. resp. Rene Chenell

Tom Petty is Still Alive and Kicking!

Tom Petty has been around for a very long time, actually since I can remember really getting into rock music, he's always been one of the performers I've admired most. If you ever get a chance to go to one of his shows, you will be amazed by how many big hits he has had over the years. This new CD will provide many more of those hits that someday we will be looking back on. You won't be disappointed in this new effort. "Running Down A Dream" sounds even better today than it did years ago. It makes this CD!!Read full review...

Tom Petty is King

Everyone has heard of Tom Petty. These are the songs that made him famous--American Girl, Refugee, Free Falling--the guy is a genius. And this December he will receive Billboard's Century Award in honor of the amazing music he has created for more than twenty years. If you're like me, and you appreciate a good classic rock collection but don't have a lot of money, or if you are a youngin just getting into classic rock, this is the way to go. Enjoy.Read full review...

all 'round music lover

My daughter and husband, 45ish, sent an online ad on Tom Petty. They were attending his concert that night. There was a chance to sample several of Tom's hits. No need for a sales pitch. Less than a minute from each of his numbers and I was sold on an artist that I was not familiar with at all.

I turned to ebay and fortunately found a cd with Petty, his greatest, and at a price I liked.

His fans and concerts are loud, but at home the music comes thru with a great beat and a good musical score.

I will use ebay "music" each time I make a new acquaintance as worthy as Petty. Thanks!!

A Fine Collection of Petty's Best Work

I was never much of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fan until I got this CD. Sure, you hear Petty tunes of the radio all the time, but the band's catalog of work is a bit daunting. To the uninitiated, this "Greatest Hits" album is a gold nugget find. One can literally listen to the entire album and enjoy every song — you'll even probably find yourself singing along more than once. Plus, "Greatest Hits" includes the now-classic "Mary Jane's Last Dance," a track never before available and written specifically for this release.

Like Credence Clearwater Revival's "Chronicle I," Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Greatest Hits" is a must addition to any music library.

Rocking Petty.

This cd makes you realize just how many great tunes Petty has made over the many years. Best thing I like about Tom Petty is his simplicity. It's just very basic rock - and he's darn good at it. Probably one of the best.
If you don't own any Petty cd's, you can't pick a better place to start than here. They're all lumped together in this excellent rocking cd !

Tom Petty

A great look into the late Tom Petty genius in music, and obvious love of what he did so well. It is with a touch of great sadness that I listen to this CD, while knowing there will be no more music from one of my heroes of rock and roll.Read full review...

Tom Petty was one of the best rockers out there, but he is another musician gone too soon. I bought the greatest hits album because a majority of the songs are amazing. I highly recommend this CD to anyone regardless of taste, because there is a little on this disc 4 everyone.Read full review...
