This is my third solid state drive and thought i'd try a Samsung, so far so good.

After trying the Crucial 1 TB SSD i've been sold on them ever since. Insanely fast compared to platter HD's and even hybrids. My quibble with the Crucial is it is SUPPOSED to be 1 tb capacity but only shows 698 GB capacity! 300 gb lost is not a minor thing...it might have been taken over by the reserve partition or something like that but, this irked me enough to want to try another brand.

As always, installation has the possibility to be a headache but, the enclosed DVD that came with the drive, did all the work. I don't think the program cares what brand or type you use as source disk, there is no going to their site and entering some code just so you can download and use your own cloning program for your own disk, no codes to enter and nothing to download. Simple install of the cloning program, then you tell it to clone your drive and the program does the rest. It will not shut off your computer automatically as the Crucial drive program does so you have to check the screen for the notice that tells you to shut off your computer now. I cloned using a Crucial solid state drive as source disk, and i timed it at a half hour start to finish. (I'd guess a platter type source drive will take longer but I don't really know).
Anyway when it tells you shut off the computer, then restart to boot to your new drive and you are done. No muss, no fuss, easy. And the capacity of this Samsung is well over 900 GB (they say when they make the chips they can't pick exactly how big it will come out, the chips are tested and the ones close to the desired capacity are what go into the drive).

Anyway, this solid state drive is well worth it - the speed of these has spoiled me, the same way cable internet spoiled you for modems forevermore after you used it...I don't even want to bother using any platter type drive now since the slower response would drive me mad. When I used a hybrid drive as my main hard drive, boot time was over 2.5 minutes...you know the kind, where you turn on the computer and then go shave or something while it comes on? Now with a solid state drive it's less then 30 seconds, doing a restart takes maybe 40 seconds. Once you go solid state, there's no going back...

cloned my operating system but lost it

was trying to increase my C-drive because of all the windows updates I was low on space . ordered 850 to end this problem. formatted the new drive , installed the data migration software and cloned c-drive onto the 850 ssd ,seem easy enough ,received the 100% cloned remove and install the 850 Samsung .after install computer said missing operating system. reinstalled the old hard drive but this by now was wiped clean. Lucky I had an old windows 8.1 disc to boot off. Reinstalled 8.1 and had to update this to windows 10. Lucky windows 10 has a digital signature with my activation code or probably would have had to repurchase an operating discRead full review...

Excellent performing SSD

This solid state drive was an upgrade from a 5400 RPM hard drive. The change in speed was dramatic and immediate. Hard drive intensive tasks like full system scans that used to take 15 minutes now take under five minutes. File searches are almost instantaneous. Even though my HP Envy was equipped with a Core i7 and 16 GB of RAM, I found virtual machines to run slowly, but that has all changed now.

Some may miss the hard drive clicking noise, but I will not. I was able to disable the fall sensor software on the computer, as it is no longer needed. A laptop fall will no longer threaten all my data. There has also been a minor boost to battery power as there is no longer a hard drive that needs to be kept spinning, but the change is far from dramatic.

I paid around $100 under the market price and received just a hard drive with no instruction manuals or cables, which was perfect for a laptop installation. I highly recommend this product if you can find a good price.

Works with Linux Mint

I prefer Linux Mint 17 for its speed and features. Some of my programs require the Windows operating system. I have Windows 10 as a secondary operating system with the dual-boot feature. No problems at all. It improves the speed of Windows 10 boot, and operation. Linux Mint naturally boots faster, but the 850 Evo improves the performance even more.

if you are using Virtual Box, there are improvements in speed when running Windows 10 versus running Virtual Box on a standard hard drive.

All the SSD's will improve your performance significantly. I don't recommend getting too hung up on the technical specs. You won't notice any difference between brands. What I like about the Samsung Evo 850 is that it has a five year warranty. By the time it is out of warranty, it will be obsolete.

Fast, lightweight. Samsung quality. Plug and Play.

Installed in my Macbook Pro 17" 2011 to replace a 1TB hard drive. Extremely lightning fast! 1TB has lots of space. Opens apps very quickly, good bye to the beach ball. I run VMware with Windows 10 OS on it and had problems running my software before because it was so slow. Now it is very very fast, just like a new computer. Best upgrade ever. Used Carbon Copy Cloner (30 day free trial) and a usb to SATA adapter to clone my hard drive, then installed it. Worked flawlessly. Bought a hard drive enclosure tool free case for my old drive and now have a 1TB external drive.Read full review...

Never us a Regular Hard Drive Again!

I started using these drives a few years ago in my notebooks, and really liked the quality and speed of these drives, especially the Samsung EVO units. I think these are probably the best on the market. This drive was for my new 17" HP notebook and it works great. Very fast and reliable. It is about 8 to 10 times faster than the drive that came with the computer (a 1TB 7200RPM spin drive). Haven't had any failures on the Samsung drives, so they are my favorite.Read full review...

The best SATA SSD in the business

Comes with Samsung Magician, which makes copying data to the new drive easy. I used an inexpensive USB-SATA adapter, plugged in the Samsung 850 EVO, used the software to copy my old drive, then when it was complete I shut down my PC, put the Samsung in, and away I went.

0 issues.

I over-provisioned it intentionally (left 100GB free unused space when I set up Windows partitions) in order to allow the drive to last longer and perform better over time.

10/10, would buy again.

Fast Large SSD for Gaming Systems

This Samsung 1TB SSD is fast. Obviously is also very large in storage size for an SSD. I used it in a friends gaming PC as the OS drive running Windows 10 and also as the main drive to install games on. From Windows boot Times to game load times eveything happens lightning quick. The Samsung 850 Series is an improvement over the 840 Series and definitely worth the price if your looking for enough SSD storage for your OS, games and Apps. Higly recommend to anyone with the need for a large SSD.Read full review...

850 EVO 1TB in a ASUS G751JL

I bought this for my ASUS ROG G751JL Notebook to replace the stock HGST 1TB HDD it came with new. I tried to use Acronis 2016 to clone my original drive to the 850 EVO installed in the second bay of the notebook. The cloning reported success. And the system would boot to the 850 EVO, but it would then not respond past the login screen. I feared it may be incompatible. But then I installed the accompanying One Stop Install Navigator software and, after updating it to the latest version, which it wanted to do itself anyway, used it to clone from my stock HGST drive, to the 850 EVO via a connection using a Vantek NexStar dual USB 3.0 dock. With the HGST in it's original position in the G7510JL, and the 850 EVO in the dock, and connected via USB 3.0 to the Notebook, the Navigator software recognized both drives and the cloning process completed successfully. I then removed the original HGST drive, and replaced it with the 850 EVO, and it booted up like a champ. I've used SSD drives before. If you haven't used one for your C drive, you are in for a shock. It is blazingly fast. My boot up time went from minutes to a few seconds. I'm a software developer and use Visual Studio a lot. It took minutes to load one instance of Visual Studio with the HDD (I use a ton of addins). And that is with 32 GB of RAM. Purely a hard drive bottleneck issue. It now takes 13 seconds for one instance to load. And as you can imagine from that, everything else is now uber fast. The drive itself is a bit pricey. But hey. It's 1TB. I've had several SSD drives in the past. All but one eventually failed fairly quickly. My recommendation is, if you rely on you machine as much as I do, like, for a living, and you want crazy fast speed, then go for the 850 EVO or some equivalent. But, back up your drive. Your system is only as good as your last backup.Read full review...

Any SSD will be a speed improvement over a hard drive. This however is "top shelf" and worth its premium! 1- It is faster than the vast majority of its competition. While too technical to go into here, there are far more than the 3 or 5 specifications usually provided in advertisements that reveal actual speed in use. This is zoom zoom fast! 2- Samsung provides a generous warranty. 3- Easy to use state-of-the-art software: Makes cloning your OS drive a breeze. Testing, diagnosing and configuring your drive AND the OS are included. An awesome caching program is included as well. 4- It's ONE GIG! In the future that won't be much, but for now it's great! Room for more than one Operating System, any frequently accessed program (browser, utility, game, Paging file...) will benefit. If you're sly you know what goes on in the background. Point it to your SSD and crank it up!Read full review...

came very fast, runs smooth

it's a good product, but it didn't came with a sata to usb cable to clone my hard drive, so I had to buy it separate.
if you want to install linux on it, be aware that the samsung magician does not work on Linux (there is some version for linux servers, but It didn't work for me). you have to do trimming sometimes to preserve the lifespan of the ssd, increase performance and space. but do not use the discard option in Linux, instead make a command to run manual trimming every day/week/boot/etc. activating discard automatic trimming will reduce the performance of the drive severely. also, to maintain good stable performance use the over provisioning tool on samsung magician, or allocate 10%-25% of the drive to another partition and don't use this partition (you don't want the SSD to get close to full).

so if you are using Linux and don't have acess to samsung magician. make a partition with 10-25% of the drive, run
fstrim -v /
command every day/week on the terminal. (it depends on how much you write/delete files on your SSD)
