Indispensable Reference for Cold War Period South African Armored Fighting Vehicles.
This is an excellent account of the development in South Africa of armored fighting vehicle design, manufacture, and employment during the Cold War period. Because of Apartheid, a ban on the sale of arms to South Africa was put in place. As a result, South Africa was forced to rely on its own resources to produce the arms it needed for the conflicts it fought in Angola and Namibia. The talents of South African engineers are vividly demonstrated in this well illustrated volume. A wide range of wheeled armored vehicles were created and employed by South Africa to meet the unique challenges of warfare in Southern Africa. In particular, armored fighting vehicles were designed to protect their crews and passengers from the threat of land mines, which were liberally used by their opponents in Angola and Namibia.

AN EXCELLENT, LAVISHLY ILLUSTRATED INTRODUCTION TO MEDIEVAL IRELAND PRIOR TO THE ANGLO-NORMAN INVASION OF 1169
This remarkable history manages to synthesize the remarkable advances made in our understanding of Ireland during the Middle Ages over the past decades, including a great many in-depth study of primary sources and archaeological discoveries. This information is incorporated into the text, which covers the introduction and flourishing of Christianity, the impact of Vikings from Norway, and the evolution of features of Irish society, including the nature of kingship. The book is lavishly provided with color illustrations depicting artifacts, structures, charts, and a great many informative maps. In addition, translations of excerpts from a variety of written works from Medieval Ireland are included. This book cannot be recommended to highly!

Indispensable Study of Medieval Armor.
When two armies fought the Battle of Wisby (1361) on the Swedish island of Gotland, they left one of the most important collections of Medieval armor for future generations to discover. Contrary to the usual practice and for reasons that remain unclear, a great many of the dead were buried in mass graves with their armor. At the beginning of the 20th century these mass graves were excavated. This revealed a remarkable treasure trove of medieval armor, along with the skeletal remains of these dead soldiers. This wonderfully thorough study, originally published in two volumes - reprinted here in a single volume - examines in great detail both the skeletal remains, which reveal the horrific wounds sustained in a Medieval combat (which provides clues as to how hand-to-hand fighting was actually conducted), and a large collection of body armor, which the authors place in the context of similar forms of armor used throughout the Eurasia. As such, the value of this book extends beyond the study of 14th century northern Europe. Anyone pursuing a serious interest in either the history of body armor or the conduct of warfare in the Middle Ages should have a copy of this book resting on their shelves.
