The Galaxy S5 sort-of-Mini
The Galaxy Alpha is a 2014 mid-upper-range smartphone made by Samsung.
This phone's claims-to-fame are its smaller-than-average (in the Android sector) 4.7" display like the iPhone 6 and Lumia 735 and metal frame.
The Alpha is a very well made phone and looks & feels premium. It's comparable to the Galaxy S 5 in the horsepower it packs under-the-hood as well as the fingerprint sensor and heartrate monitor of its larger, more popular sibling.
However in cutting the size down the phone lost battery capacity and the microSD slot. The microSD hasn't proven a dealbreaker for me as my model has 32 GB onboard. But the relatively small battery is a potential sticking point. I did get 12 hours out of the phone, which isn't too bad I suppose. I've played with potential power saving measures since. It won't beat my iPhone 5s just yet, but its not going to make me go back to iOS for now.
Other reviews indicate the camera on the back of this isn't bad at all, I concur.
IN A NUTSHELL, I'd call this a capable, premium smartphone with mediocre battery life that won't bust the bank or your pocket today. And for some, a smaller phone with powerful guts is worth.
Model tested was the Snapdragon-powered G850W model with CM13.
The 850A model for ATT cannot run custom ROMs and other Exynos-powered models are not something I read up on.
Officially its slated to receive Android Marshmallow sometime this year, although I'm not a fan of stock stuff personally.
WHAT I WOULD COMPARE WITH:
Samsung Galaxy S5 and S5 Mini
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact
