Cheap firewall/router hardware
2 of 2 found this helpful My new Corporate Firewall in-house.
I work as a systems security engineer and got this to show my employers a PoC of what opensource can provide our organization.
Now I use it as a router/IDPS/NGFW/VPN/DNSBLOCKER for the house using pfsense.
Works as expected - more than enough for what I need at home.

You gotta know what you are buying, and how to use it to make this a really good deal! Can be used as JBOD for anything if you know how to set it up.
I knew what I was buying so for me this was great!
24x600gb SAS 2.5 6GBps Drives with JBOD for $350 is a steal.
I knew drives would be well used, and I expected a few to be unusable (only one spit out too many read/write errors to be unusable when checking SMART).
I am using this as a Datastore for a Debian Qemu Hypervisor running on a Dell R610. I got a LSI card in IT mode and formatted all the drives to 512 bytes block size (netapp used 520 byte disk sectors). Had to build some tools like sas2ircu and megaraid to get it all working, but it was well worth it.
12TB of usable space @ Linux RAID6+2 hotspare for ~$450 (for cables, and IT Mode HBA) is some incredible value!
All in all, I am happy :)
