Niccolo Did It Better
This is the final book in the "Lymond Chronicles". It is well written, of course, but i did not enjoy the series as much as "House of Niccolo". The problem for me was the thoroughly irritating character of Philippa Somerville, who barges through the first few books of the series before finally committing one silly act too many (i.e. confronting Leonard Bailey, who subsequently rapes her). I had hoped against hope that Lymond would not "end up" with her, but soon realised it was inevitable that he would.
Actually, I think it's a pity that Dorothy Dunnett didn't kill Lymond off, finally slain by the spoilt, petulant Austin Grey. That would have been a braver option than using the unpleasant Marthe, his lookalike half-sister, as a copout. On the other hand, i do think that Mrs Dunnett deserves credit for treating the subject of astrology with respect. Unlike the rather silly Susannah Gregory, she has had the sense to understand that astrology was a valid and respected practice in those days, and as far as I'm concerned still should be!
Just lastly - why is Kuzum's pet name for Philippa spelt as "Filly" and not "Philly", which would make more sense, and make poor old Phil seem less like a lady horse!

Outlandish
1. Too long. I gagged at about the 5th chapter.
2. Too many non-engaging characters. Of course, this is a matter of opinion. It seems plenty of people find them fascinating.
3. Too many trite references ("You can't go home again", " Carpe Diem", etrc.. Maybe an exaggeration, but one cliche is one too many.
4. Too boring! The subject of the American Revolution has surely been covered much better elsewhere, and the sex scenes between Claire and Jamie are a bit tedious.

A Review
Not a bad yarn - the connection to Mary Shelley and Frankenstein gives a bit of literary interest, as with the Jane Austen theme in "Diamond Solitaire".
Lovesey writes well, though like Anne Perry and so many others he has the tiresome habit of studiously avoiding adverbs, so that Diamond etc are forever saying or doing something "with such-and-such". It does get so tedious!
There, there, Peter. It's all right, Anne. It's only a silly little adverb. IT WON'T HURT YOU!!
