A very disappointing account of an era in computing that offered so much...
This is a very brief and somewhat disappointing account of an era in computing that offered so much. This seems like such a wasted opportunity to produce a comprehensive account of such an exciting era in technology. Searches on the internet would form a far better compilation and information, which makes one wonder why the author would waste this opportunity with such a brief collection of specs. Admittedly I overlooked that fact that it was restricted (for whatever reason) to laptop computers, when portability in that era was limited. Commodore and Apple are very poorly represented, but were such a significant influence in the computer industry in that era. The quality of the B&W photos is embarrassingly poor, with at least 10 not available, and a few downloaded from www.old-computers.com. Quick searches online make these more than readily available, and in colour! There are many typographical errors, with the # used to replace currency and weight units in many cases for some reason. “Unk” is used as an expression, presumably for Unknown, where N/A is possibly a more conventional nomenclature when information is not available. Such a reference would have been better with pictures of screen display, software capability and common problems, which may have given more insight into that era. How these were adapted from their desktop counterparts would also have formed a useful reference. Software compatibility and Operating systems would have formed a good reference. The power of word processing would have formed a good frame of reference about the functionality of each machine. As would have any communication interfaces, as dial up billboards would have been in operation at that time. Data sharing between machines and peripherals would have been quite valid, especially with typewriters and fax machines forming basic office equipment at that time and looking at being replaced by these machines.
