BADFINGER-WISH YOU WERE HERE (EXPANDED EDITION) (US IMPORT) CD NEW
14 February 2019
Fantastic album including extras for committed fans.
Terrific album with some added bonuses that I never even suspected might be on the cards. This is really a release for people who are already fans of the album - the basic album is available a lot cheaper - the extras are for the already-converted. There's one new song which is a bit of a throwaway, but which they play as well as most songs on the album, plus alternate mixes of nearly all of the other songs (King of the Load is MIA), most featuring overdubs that were rejected at the time. There's noting amongst them that you'll prefer to Chris Thomas's original mixes, but it's fascinating to hear what else was in their minds at the time. The remixes tend to emphasise parts that are quieter in the original mixes as well - backing vocal sounds louder than lead vocals, for instance, so there's plenty new to listen to, but you'll probably only play them a handful of times. Like the Beatles Anthology series...
Decade in Tory by Russell Jones
14 May 2023
Hilarious compelling summation of a decade of misrule.
What feels like it might be a hard slog through a decade of Tory misrule is made compelling by Russell Jones’ hilarious skewering of the shower of incompetents who’ve been consistently steering our country into any available ditch. It ought to be on the curriculum!
The Chiffons - Stereo Singles Collections [Used Very Good CD]
08 September 2023
Poorly executed example of digitally extracted stereo.
Digitally extracted stereo is extremely clever at pulling apart old mono mixes and transforming them into stereo, but it does need careful monitoring. Unfortunately the mixes on this double CD of The Chiffons’ singles sounds like it was ‘mixed’ by pressing a button and leaving the computer to it. Vocals and instruments dart around in the stereo pan like mad flies, depending on what notes they’re singing/playing or what’s going on behind them in the arrangement; occasionally the program is so defeated that a lead vocal will simply drop out for an occasional note. It’s an interesting listen if you want to pull the mixes apart and gain a fuller understanding of what’s being played, but as a pure listening experience this is far inferior to the original mono mixes.
