Creality3D CR-10S5 3D Printer 500x500x500mm
29 July 2020
Much better than expected
As an early adopter of 3D printing, having used printers for 7 years now, I have to say I'm mighty impressed with this. I was fully expecting to have to do a fair bit of modification to make it reliable and effective but straight out of the box I was printing within a couple of hours, reliably, with the supplied filament. Bed was levelled in minutes and an internet-sourced Simplify3D profile gave me great results straight away. The build volume is what I was after, and the external control box is better for me as I will be putting the unit in an enclosure, so these slightly older models are better value for money for serious builders. I'm going to put some threaded M6 rod onto the device with some rod ends to effectively upgrade it with some bracing like the newer models, and I've got a BLtouch to install at some point for those big volume prints. So far so good. Time will tell on the reliability front but given the hassle I've had over the last 7 years maintaining a RepRapPro I really don't think this printer will be a fraction of the effort to keep running!
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens
23 August 2017
That "go-to" lens for the pro user
Anyone who knows what they're looking at won't need me to tell them why they need this. I upgraded from a pretty versatile 28-300 Canon lens, itself fairly budget in the grand scheme of things (consider it probably high-end for the home user, but for any professional photographer it would be considered low-end). The 70-200/2.8 sucks in so much light, I'm a little concerned about the longevity of the coronal mass of the sun if Canon sell too many of these things... there'll be none of it left. The IS feature is great and you can really see (and feel) it working. The *only* downsides I can think of for some people might be if they fail to appreciate the size and weight of it. It's not a quick "whip it out" convenience lens and it dwarfs my 60D. But it's flexibility is awesome. Maybe a slightly shorter focal length may make it more useful but, meh... who's complaining... not me :)

1/4 Bsp Flow Control Valve, Uni Directional Aluminium body one way control
24 January 2018
Good budget option but not as pictured
Used to control lubricant/coolant in a home CNC solution. It works fine, allow adjustment of flow rate of coolant/lubricant into a mist system I use. The adjustment has to be done very carefully as the response isn't fine - you can adjust too much very easily. The screw adjuster feels a little loose/vague, if we're being picky about things, but it does the job fine. My main annoyance is that it's not as per the image, and I was hoping for the mounting holes in the body of the valve. It is nothing like the image, though, it is much smaller and has no facility for mounting the block to a machine.
