Yuneec Typhoon H UHD 4K NEW YUNTYHSCUS Coll Avoidance Hexacopter Drone, ST16
16 January 2019
Typhoon H is Pretty Good
These Typhoon Hs don't get a lot of 3rd party developers working on software so there's nothing quite like Litchi or DroneDeploy for them like there are for DJI. There is UAVToolKit which runs on the ST-16 controller to edit CCC Curved Cable Cam missions without flying them first, but other promising projects appear dead in the water. The H _looks_ a lot like the Typhoon H520, but it lacks the API and SDK that it takes to do advanced mission planning. The collision avoidance isn't as advanced as a Mavic 2, but I keep mine mostly turned off anyway, is easy to avoid flying into things if you keep it away from them. The stability isn't great and I've found the have a tendency to jump a few feet or couple of yards if the GPS drops out. So, I only fly Typhoons in wide-open places, over things, and they're a stable platform. If I need to fly under trees or close to anything I use a Mavic Pro or Mavic 2. With these limitations in mind, I like my Typhoon Hs. They were one of the first to put a 1" sensor in a camera with their CGO3+ and it's still good video and photos compared to DJI or Bebops. And, the H supports Yuneec's CGO-ET, a relatively cheap low-light and thermal camera combo that does what I need. A Typhoon H + CGO-ET comes in at soemthing like $2,400 where the H520 also supoports the CGO-ET but the combo is over $4K. The Typhoon H is a pretty good drone, IMHO. They've been on the market a long time now, prices have dropped a bit, and they are a good value.

My first Stephen Hunter read
Somehow, a Stephen Hunter book has never winked at me from the remainder bins or stacks of old library books where I usually find my fiction. Night of Thunder popped up in my consciousness somehow, I found it at Half.com, and after reading it will go looking for Hunter's other book. Where some suspense writers require that we suspend disbelief, believe new things, or overlook this or that issue to enjoy their characters & story, in this book Hunter relates dialog & details that ring as true as if the book was researched, like Capote's In Cold Blood, and not imagined by a retired film critic. Hunter tangles a Good Ex-Marine, a bad Country Preacher & his incestuous clan, meth freaks, local good guys, the sheriff's office, and race day at Bristol Motor Speedway into a story where we know who's done something bad from the outset, but keep turning pages to see what else gets done, what motivates the evil-doers, and how the good guy will prevail.

If you occasionally need 11X17 color print-outs this is good for you!
This printer is the slowest on my hallway! Forget what it says about pages-per-minute since it takes forever to kick out a page. But, it's the only one on the hallway that can print 11X17 in color. The old 1220C has a USB port on it, where the even older 1120C only has parallel, so I got this one to use in my office where the usual computer is a notebook with no parallel port. If the paper pickup rollers are kept scruffed up and clean (I use tape path cleaner, probably the last can in existance) it will feed the large sheets reliably and can print in small batches. I use it to print 20 to 30 'tabloid' newsletters quarterly, to print an analysis document or diagram if it's going to be used around a table or in class, and also use it to print 11X17 signs to laminate and post to announce this or that at the dog park. If this one lasts as long as the 1120C, which is still going strong, it'll still be around in 2020, if we're still using paper then. A side-benefit is that the ink cartridges for HP's large format printers are _huge_ and don't cost a lot more than the teensy little cartridges that cost as much as the smaller printers themselves.
