Goodbye Paradise Ozploitation Classics : NEW DVD
04 August 2022
Excellent film, good to own, triumphs over disappointing picture/sound presentation
A bit of a lost gem amongst Australian output in the 80s, Goodbye Paradise won both the Best Actor and Screenplay prizes from the AFI in advance of its general release (plus nominations for Best Film and Direction), yet seems not to have been widely distributed at the time, resulting in few tickets being sold and, consequently, little appreciation from the public. VHS was where I got my first taste of the film; turns out it was not something that my younger self could connect with, or enthuse about, very much at the time, but it certainly got better with age: a satirical detective mystery like no other that I’m aware of. The DVD debut was shamefully overdue, and the 4:3 picture ratio isn’t what I was hoping for (even if it might be open-matte); the scenic nature of GP’s setting deserves to utilise as much of your TV screen as possible - but in the absence of anything better, it’ll do.
THE PLOUGHMAN'S LUNCH - 1 DVD...Region 4.

A superbly intelliegent, impressive, underappreciated gem
A sobering character study, a cutting social portrait of the UK in the early 80s, and an eye-opening trip back in time and into the actual Conservative Party Conference, which gives The Ploughman's Lunch a true feeling of documentary reality even though it is a meticulously scripted work from the mind of Ian McEwan, with multiple layers and angles that reward repeat viewings.

Early Kubrick gold
Strong film, equally strong disc.
