When is a DSLR not a DSLR?
When it's a Sony CyberShot DSC-R1, that's when. The Sony DSC-R1 is essentially a DSLR camera, but without an interchangeable lens system. The DSC-R1 uses a huge DSLR quality image sensor which is paired with an excellent Carl-Zeiss lens. With this combination, this camera can take excellent quality images that can rival the quality of some current DSLR cameras. The Sony DSC-R1 uses that DSLR quality sensor in the body of a "simpler" point-and-shoot prosumer camera. That's not to say the DSC-R1 is simple, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, this camera would likely be a great tool for someone wishing to learn to use a DSLR camera, a foot in the door, without laying out the money that would probably be required for a DSLR body and lens kit. It can also serve as an excellent, well rounded point-and-shoot camera, of course. The camera is excellent to handle, with a good solid construction. Its lens works similar to a DSLR lens, with manual zoom and focus rings on it. The focus (and everything else, for that matter) can be set to automatic, or all of the camera's settings can be set individually, just like a high-end camera. The camera is very quick to turn on (almost instant) because of the manual zoom. Since the camera zoom is manual, the camera doesn't extend the zoom or run through the range of motion when the camera is first turned on. This means when the power button is first pressed, the camera can capture a picture after approximately 1.5 - 2 seconds. The camera will also enter a sleep mode to save power after a preset time. A red light indicates this next to the shutter release. The camera has both an eye viewfinder, and a display screen which swivels and pivots many different ways (which I personally prefer.) The automatic viewfinder switch will change between display or eyepiece if your eye is pressed against it, but it is very sensitive and will switch back and forth accidentally. I usually just switch between display and eyepiece manually. You can swivel the display on top for many difficult shots. The screen will even face forwards, meaning you can actually take a self-portrait or family picture and look at the display at the same time. It can even flip and point straight upwards, to look down at for waist-level shooting (the method I usually use.) The camera uses a standard Sony style rechargeable battery (used with many Sony digital cameras and camcorders) It gives good service and tells battery time remaining on the display (Sony calls it InfoLithium.) The battery charges in the camera, but I'd personally buy an extra battery and a external charger, so you don't tie up the camera trying to charge one battery. It uses CompactFlash cards and Sony MemorySticks, which can both be in the camera at the same time. There is a switch for switching between the two. Keep in mind this isn't the SD style memory cards, but standard (larger) CF cards. The camera will accept many accessories, like a remote shutter trigger that can be plugged in, and also a flash hot-shoe and another remote flash trigger, located on the side of the camera with its USB port. I believe, in my humble opinion, that this camera will quite possibly go down in the history books as one of the best, if not the best prosumer camera ever made, and if you're willing to carry something larger than a pocket cam, and not looking for a DSLR (or maybe not yet), this camera should be on your short list of cameras to pick from.
