Calibrite Grey Balance cheker (mini)
As you would quickly observe, products from Calibrite are not cheap. Nor are they made as a mass-produced token afterthought, nor again are they inaccurate when applied with correct, professional skill. There is a vast difference in quality, accuracy and durability between a $5.00 grey card and the cat's whiskers of grey cards made by Calibrite. Having said that, there are some points to be made.
Potential users of this card should be aware that it is not particularly waterproof, nor colour-stable: exposure to rain (even a few drops) will result in withering of the card, while exposure to bright, hot sunlight, especially in the summer months in Australia, will accelerate fading; in essence, these scenarios will mean the card drifts further away from true 18% grey value to the point of being an unreliable reference point. Oily/greasy fingers will similarly have a detrimental effect.
Protecting this card requires a bit of innovative thinking. I searched long and hard for an ID pouch that was the right size, and which could be snap-closed when required (pic).
In the application of analogue photography, the Calibrite card is best used with a 1° to 5° spotmeter that fills the meter's viewfinder, in the same light as the subject (not shadowed).
The card comes in a two-piece 'wallet': the inner, an acid-free fine fibre envelope and the outer "carrier" slipcase. I ditched both of these in preference for having the card promptly accessible in a snug-fitting ID pouch which in turn is attached to a Director's Hitch.
Top take-aways is that the quality is outstanding, the accuracy of the grey tint is unquestionable and the price is...well, nothing is cheap at this time.

Bees Knees of GPS, but requires practice
1 of 1 found this helpful My first GPS was undeniably a leap into the deep end!
Came with Blue Chart (marine) maps, swapped out to AU/NZ V4 AU/NZ maps. Full featured, nimble-handling device may appear complex and confusing initially, but it will grow on users with an intuitive drive. Bluetooth phone connectivity works well. Locks on (many!) satellites very quickly (visual indication of where), even in gorges and covered rainforest / vegetation areas. Battery life can be an issue of concern, which can be much improved using 2450mAh NiMh AA batteries for extended in-field use (carry one set of spares) and making use of battery saving options on device. Excellent BaseCamp PC software for 'roll-your-own' mapping and trip transfer. All up, money very, very well spent for a device that begs action and adventure.

Tiny PLB with big specs
2 of 2 found this helpful When I saw this on display in a retail store, I initially passed it off as too small and fiddly and likely ineffective. Wrong on all counts. It is a semi-permanent attachment to my photography pack and I never notice it is there, but can rely on it to summon help in the worst, unexpected situation. The big selling point of the OceanRescue PLB is the tiny size (compare it to others on the market, in weight and size) and the 115gm weight. Definitely a tour de force in the new small and unobtrusive genre of PLBs. 5*
