Tamiya 80040 X20 Enamel Thinner 250ml Large Size For Paint Color Craft Tools
14 June 2016
A thinner form the best quality hobby enamel around.
Anyone who;s run across my brief review of Tamiya's enamels know the high opinion I have of them. For anyone who recalls the superb Pactra enamels of sainted memory, they're the next best thing. The Tamiya X-20 Enamel Thinner is - obviously - designed for use with their enamel paints. It's a highly-refined thinner, similar to mineral spirits but less "hot", and so less likely to attack acrylic undercoats when used as the carrier for a wash. Like the Tamiya enamel colors, the only drawback is that it's not imported to North America at all. But it can easily be obtained from a variety of hobby vendors in Southeast Asia. With exchange rates at their present levels, it's not terribly expensive considering its quality. But if the dollar weakens, how long will this situation obtain? Like most Tamiya products, the Enamel Thinner is "highly recommended".

Wave Materials HT101 Paint Mixer

Looks like an extravagance, but it's not.
Electric paint stirrers seem silly. What can they do that a stick or metal rod can't? I have been surprised by what a time-saver these are, and how much use I have gotten from them. Badger in the US makes a similar tool, but it's usually slightly more costly when found retail. This tool is just as good, and can usually be found for less, labeled as Wave or Trumpeter. I find that the shorter stem on the stirring mechanism is easier to work with than the long stem on similar devices, and this one is helpfully stiffer and thicker, too. I've been using one heavily for five years now, with no sign of the motor or switch failing. Only had to replace batteries periodically. A very useful and convenient tool!
GSI Creos Mr.Hobby GT65 Mr. Line Chisel

Possibly the best scriber you can buy
The GSI-Creos "Mr. Line Chisel" is well-made, stable in the hand and benefits from having a variety of interchangeable scribing tips available in sizes from 0.01mm up to more than 1.0mm in width. It's a very versatile tool, and the interchangab;e tips no only solve the problem of wear, but add the flexibility to match the existing scribing on kits from a range of manufacturers, from Hasegawa's subtle panel lines to Airfix's more definite demarcations, and everything in between. Like pretty much everything from GSI Creos, this is a very well thought-out tool, and perfectly suited to the needs of the plastic modeler. Very highly recommended.
