Don't wait for the movie adaptation.
At this point in the series, the writer can tell his story without lots of exposition, leaving plenty of time for witty dialogue, character moments, and atmospheric details. This mystery has a couple of genuinely surprising twists, and some moments will ring chillingly true for American readers.

La-La-La Love Story
This is a classic Japanese drama which features fine performances, and dialogue that's conversational while imbued with humor and soul. (In fact, I recommend it to people learning Japanese for that reason.) It truly earns its happy ending.
