Monolith Portable Headphone Amplifier and DAC with THX AAA Technology
09 December 2020
Premium quality portable amp
Pros: - Clear, detailed, transparent sound - Silent, no noise interference - Smooth, tactile volume knob - Precise volume control via decibel display - Dirac Sensaround actually useful - Custom EQ profiles - Solid build quality - 3 input options for versatility Cons: - Expensive - Sound may be too clinical for some - Lack of touchscreen display hinders ease of use - No graphic EQ display makes for less than intuitive adjustments This is the best sounding portable headphone amp I have used. Pricey, but worth it for the quality you're getting. It brings out the best in my M570 planar headphones and drives them easily as well. I love the big volume knob. It lets me control volume precisely with the on-screen decibel meter. It's just too bad that the display is not touch capable, as that would have made it easier to go through the menus. And the lack of a graphical EQ display means you don't have an "at-a-glance" view of your adjustments in a custom profile. The Dirac Sensaround function is actually useful. More for some music than others, but it's good to have. I find that it alleviates the abrupt left/right channel panning in early stereo recordings, to make for a much more pleasant, natural sound. I really enjoyed listening to the early Beatles albums with Sensaround. Overall, I'm deeply impressed by this Monolith amp. Highly recommended. It has made redundant most of my other headphone amps.
Symphony 5 (Originals) - Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic Orch. (CD New)
20 April 2021
Great orchestra, great performance
I had been curious about Karajan's version of Mahler's Fifth for a long time, but never got around to listening to it until now. It turns out to be a very impressive performance. This is a long and complicated work of music, but Karajan has a thorough command of it. Nothing escapes his attention. Under his direction, the Berliners play with amazing precision to bring out seemingly every detail of the score. But it isn't just a dry performance - the orchestra plays with gusto, too. That said, it's fair to say it's less "heated" than Bernstein's version with the Vienna Philharmonic, which is an emotional roller coaster ride. Karajan presents more of a smooth train ride, with controlled turbulence. Bernstein's Vienna recording remains my favorite Mahler Fifth for its emotive power, but Karajan's is a refreshing change of pace. It has plenty of bite and its own kind of power. If you like this symphony, then you should find a lot to enjoy about Karajan's take on it.
Monolith M570 Over Ear Open Back Planar Magnetic Headphone With Padded Headband
10 December 2020
Superb headphones with some caveats
Pros: - Superlative detail retrieval - Great value for money - Excellent bass response - Plush earpads - Clearly indicated L/R cups and cord - Folds flat, slim profile when in case - Handsome zebra wood earcups Cons: - Weight can cause neck/shoulder strain - Needs good amplification to come alive - Treble may be too intense for some - Open back design does not block out noise - Headband can become painful unless stretched for looser fit The M570s are reference quality headphones. The amount of detail they can reveal in music is incredible, and they can hit the deep low frequencies as well. But they need a good headphone amp to do them justice. They are also large and heavy headphones. That could be a deal breaker for some. You really feel these cans on your head. Gently flexing the headband has helped to make them more comfortable for me, but YMMV. If you can get over the weight of the M570s, then they will reward you magnificently. For comparison, I also have the M1060s, and to my ears the M570s are clearly superior.
