Ender's Shadow (Deja Vu all over again)
Orson Scott Card writes science fiction for sentient species. If you don't have a functioning brain or don't want to improve a lazy brain, stop here.
If you liked Ender's Game you'll like Ender's Shadow. Same story, different eyes. Little kids are still heroes but since they are little kids with giant intellects you forget how old they are, sometimes.
Great mixture of street smarts and high aspirations, the secular and the religious, no mercy and compassion. The stakes and ideas are large.
Like Ender's Game, it is placed in the near future so much of the setting is known to the reader or is an easy extension. The juggling for position and power, leadership and recognition mirrors current corporate, military and governmental politics.
You can try and outthink Card on his next plot move. He doesn't cheat - his characters are consistent and there is no magic. Card usually wins. Enjoy.
Then you'll be ready for the second book, Shadow of the Hegemon.

Who is buried in the stand of trees?
Vintage Arkady Renko. Multiple stories as usual. Lots of local Russian color, customs and foibles. Not a big ending. Whatever you wanted to get from Stalin, you got something else. A satisfying read, deeper than it appears.

Minton Gold Pandora China
Best out-of-production Minton pattern ever. Simple, clean, elegant gold on cream. Easy look as a table setting. Formal but not gaudy in-your-face.
