Rich and racy road movie
With every viewing of Ridley Scott's tremendous road movie, it gets better and better. For raucous, violent and hilarious entertainment, it is incomparable thanks to so many aspects. There is the superb mountain and desert photography, there is the rich musical scoring, the engagingly witty script and, above all, the superb performances of Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon.
This one will never date. The more you see it, the more there is to savour.

A cosy midsummer dream
Stylish and star-studded, this is pleasant entertainment for the older viewers. It is a treat visually and the performances are splendid. Tom Courtenay is particularly fine and it's good to see Maggie Smith back to serious acting, away from the tiresome Downton Abbey, as the would-be outsider at the home for retired musicians.
Dustin Hoffman directs at a suitably relaxing pace and it all unravels like a cosy midsummer night's dream. If you're more Tarantino-minded, look away now!

A rugged, riveting classic
This is a milestone movie in that it marks the very best of director Anthony Mann as well as Gary Cooper's finest since High Noon. It's one of the most tense and violent of the larger-scale westerns, with a surprisingly strong sexual content too.
Cooper avoids his usual twitchy mannerisms to give a terse, powerful portrayal of an ex-outlaw fighting to overcome his past. Mann, who directed such a string of great westerns starring James Stewart before falling out with him, actually turned down Stewart's request to play this part. It turned out to be the right decision in this case as Cooper, surprisingly in my view, really nailed it. He even stood fast against a barnstorming performance from Lee J. Cobb as his psychotic killer brother. Great support also from stalwarts John Dehner, Jack Lord and Arthur O'Connell, with lovely Julie London packing a punch as the lone female.
Filmed against wonderful western scenery, this is a true classic of the genre.
