QED - The Strange Theory of Light a..., Feynman, Richar
18 April 2024
A very enlightening book.
Feynman at his best. The book explains how light takes a path based on all the possible routes open to it, but being individual photons can only take a single route. He explains mirror action, lenses, mirages, diffraction gratings and some other optical phenomena in terms of the single photon/multiple path concept. He then goes on to compare photon behaviour with that of electrons, explaining en route the possibility clouds that quantum physics uses to represent electrons in an atom as well as why two electrons cannot have the same spin in the same band (their possibility sets would cancel each other out, just as light waves appear to do on some paths. Finally, he introduces a range of subatomic particles and their characteristics, but only addresses this subject in a very general way.

Generally happy
I bought towards the low end of the market, it's sufficient for my needs. Can be a little bit slow at times and required some adaptation from Windows. There are too many things I don't like about Windows 10, so it was a choice between going to Linux or Mac as my Windows 7 machine reaches the end of its life. Even though I have not gone into anything but the basic uses of the Mac OS, it's evident, that, with a little practice, this machine will be 1. Easier to use and 2. More effective for my needs than a Windows machine. Generally happy with my purchase.

Accents: A Manual for Actors By Robert Blumenfeld. 9780879109677

Lots of material here
There is a lot of information on phonetics. This moves on to the way certain sounds need to be altered in target accents with a series of words demonstrating the sound shift. I was expecting the author to do a "standard Irish accent". Instead he runs through the same sentences in Dublin, Belfast, Mayo and several other regional variations. His Scottish accent too is varied over six or so regions of Scotland. While he does all these accents himself, instead of using native speakers which would have been ideal, he does do it rather well, despite an element of received English sometimes coming through where it probably should not. A lot of work has gone into both the book and recordings. It's all on the CDs. The CDs are recorded very fast, leaving no time for the listener to repeat. This is unlike the standard language learning recordings which are painfully slow (thus defeating the object of automating the translation reflex.) I would recommend the book and CD for comedians and actors, but using it properly will require a considerable amount of work. Beyond that, it will probably serve as a reference manual for someone who has taken the trouble to familiarise themselves with the contents.
