The Unfair Advantage by Paul Van Valkenburgh, Mark Donohue (Paperback, 2005)
    21 July 2016
    Not exactly `UNFAIR'
Those who followed American Road racing during the peak of the Trans Am era, which for me was 1966 to 1973, would well remember Mark Donohue and the Penske Team. Many car-racing fans from that era would have a soft spot for Mark and his efforts with both the Chev Camaro and the AMC Javelin, in bringing so much success, not only for Penske, but also every single hard-working member of the team. However, it is not only about Trans Am, but also the Penske participation in other forms of motor vehicle racing such as Can Am and his early efforts in F1. This is an excellent book. It is well written and the way it is set out over a continuous yearly time-frame, has created an accurate record of Mark's racing activities and the Penske Team's vehicle development for the various race series they were involved in during that era. It also creates a nice balance between their success as well as the hard times experienced by Mark and the team. As a car-racing fan, the narrative is so interesting and informative, that you become a witness and almost part of the team. Marks comments about various aspects of racing and some of the characters involved, is an honest expression of his views and gives an insight into how he saw the motor racing world. I could never understand why it was called an `unfair' advantage when in fact their success was mainly due to dedication, tenacity and a great work ethic.
Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through a Country's Hidden Past by Giles Tremlett...
    04 July 2019
An appropriately titled book, confronting, though a pleasure to read.
To purchase and read this excellent book, I think you would have to have some interest in Spain historically or through your heritage. However, if you are interested in recent world history and learning about a culture you may never have experienced, it becomes a great educational tool. It is confronting as you can see a short history of Spain from the period of its dictatorship under Franco, to modern times. You can feel the political tensions that existed and, apparently, are still there today, though well hidden by most Spaniards and makes the title quite appropriate. At the same time, you learn much about modern Spanish culture and views that the Author has found over his many years of living, marrying and having a family grow up in Spain. It is a comfortable read and one to keep.
1:18 1962 Pontiac Royal Bobcat Catalina Hardtop -- Aquamarine -- American Muscle

    Excellent well detailed model
Excellent 1:18 scale diecast model. Very good detailing and paintwork. Auto world now make a better model than their predecessor, Ertl/American Muscle in 1:18 scale mainly due to more detail in the engine bay and interior.
