Collector’s Guide: Pegmatites
This book, part of the Schiffer’s Earth Science series, contains stunning photos and descriptions of the gemstones and collectable minerals obtained from the world’s finest granite pegmatites.
The content is pitched to the amateur collector or fossicker. It focuses on the tourmalines, beryls, feldspars, micas and the many minor accessory minerals hosted in granite pegmatites.
It is filled with large colour photos of fine specimens held in collections. It contains ample illustrations describing the formation and differentiation of granite pegmatites and their gemstone bearing zones.
This is a book for those who love tourmaline or beryl. Its photography makes it suitable for a coffee table book, while the text is sufficiently technical to assist an amateur collector develop the knowledge they require to recognise pegmatites in granites (and granitoids) and their internal structures.
The book is largely focused on North American pegmatites, but the information is applicable to any pegmatite-bearing granite.
This is just one in a series of collector’s guides to gemstones and minerals, all equally finely illustrated and aimed at the amateur collector.

Mediocre brushes
These brushes performed ok on first use. After cleaning, these brushes started dropping bristles. Lots of bristles. Had to stop & discard the brush. They were genuine bristle, just not well constructed.

Decent little sander for DIY use.
Its a good sander, for the price. It uses a six-hole platen, which is pretty much standard, meaning you can easily obtain new sanding discs from a huge range of vendors. Only a couple of very minor issues: it'd be great with an additional hold-point for two handed use, but that isn't a problem restricted to just this sander, most of the cheaper ones are the same. The dust collection isn't outstanding, but again, that isn't unique to this sander. If you need good dust suppression, it can be hooked up to a vacuum ... and don't use your existing indoor vacuum, unless you want ultrafine paint dust blowing through the house next time you use it.
Haven't used it enough to review the longevity of the hook & loop platen. They all lose their effectiveness over time. They can be replaced, and they're not expensive. Just something to be aware of.
