Berserk TV Series Season One (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set, Alpha Case)

Gets a hold and never lets go.

Berserk is one of my favorite manga series easily. This is definitely the best anime they've made based on the series. The animation is traditional and well done. The voice acting is very well done. (I don't usually watch the dubbed version, but the English audio is decent as well.) This covers the Golden Age story arc which is the rise of Griffith and the Band of the Hawk. It also serves as an origin story for the Black Swordsman Guts. There's a depth to this story you can't get in any anime. The characters are engaging and the development of the individual stories is incredible. The battle scenes are intense and do not hold anything back. Ingenious tactics and gory violence are some of the main elements utilized here. It's a whirlwind that takes to the highest peak, but also shows you the most tragic and painful depths. It's artistic, but not full of itself. It's one of the best stories ever written turned into a well made animated series. It's a shame it wasn't continued.
