Buying Second Hand Gold Jewellery Online and Offline

Safety Tips for Buying Second Hand Gold Jewellery Online and Offline.

There is an old saying “every that glitters is not gold”. Next time you are thinking of buying second hand gold jewellery online or offline be very careful of who you are trading with. Always make sure you are buying from a professional or business in the trade. As most professional businesses should have enough experience to know what should be real gold and not plated, lined, filled or fake gold etc. The most important reason is that a businesses are required by law to refund money once an item has been returned if a customer is not happy. For such reasons as not the quality you were expecting, damaged, does not fit, or not what you though it might look like once received.

Also please be aware if your thinking of buying brand new gold Jewellery from the big main retail Jewellery stores ? They are now selling gold plated silver jewellery. These items will be hallmarked with two hallmarks example 925 & 375, or a hallmark with 1/10 meaning the item has been plated with gold. My best advise would be to ask for real gold and not gold plated silver when buying your next piece of new gold jewellery.

Gold jewellery is usually hallmarked by Carat = ct, Karat = K or by numbers, some numbers might be followed by the percentage symbol %. This only is only used as a guide for what percentage the gold jewellery is meant to be. This does not guarantee it is real gold or the percentage of the gold jewellery. Unfortunately most countries around the world do not have any rules and regulations to who can buy or stamp hallmarks or hallmark an item of jewellery. Most importantly there are no quality control measure in place to check the percentage a piece of gold jewellery in meant to be. This is common knowledge to any professional gold buyer's or refiner’s

Is It Safe To Buy Second Hand Gold Jewellery Without A Hallmark?
Yes but only if you are buying from a professional gold buyer or refining business with many years of experience. Sometimes due to the age, wear or softness of the gold being made of a higher percent a hallmark can wear off the piece of gold jewellery all together. Another reason is a piece of jewellery can be man made by a private person or jeweller who fails to hallmark there piece of jewellery.

Why Is It Safer To Buy Second Hand Gold Jewellery From A Professional Gold Buyer Or Refiner With Many Years Of Experience?
Another old saying “experience makes you wise “. This is very important to when buying any form of gold. As gold is one of the oldest commodities man has been trading in since it was first discovered, has the most cons and scams than any other commodity. Mainly due to the fact it is one the most common traded commodities used as a form of currency or a backer of currency.

This is the main reason it is important to buy from an experienced gold buyer or refiner with many years of experience. As most gold buyers or refiners with experience will know all the cons or scams when it comes to buying gold in all shapes & forms.

They will conduct many more tests that can only come with experience & not by using a pre made acid kit or rubbing stick as these are not reliable. Pre made acid kits & rubbing sticks are only good for testing the surface only. An experienced gold buyer or refiner will most times know within seconds once a piece of jewellery is shown or placed in their hands. Most times they will know by the way it looks, feels, colour & the weight compared to the size of the piece of jewellery.

If unsure they will then conduct many professional tests or destroy to determine if the piece of jewellery is real gold and not plated, lined, filled or fake gold etc. These same principles can be uses when buying gold and silver in any shape and form. Raw unrefined gold, alluvial gold, gold nuggets, gold and silver bullion, precious metals & most modern coins. Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Persian coins were made by cast and they need to be further researched by an experienced coin dealer in this area of expertise.
