How to Clean Stained Coffee Cups

Stained coffee cups are unattractive, and impair the flavour of the coffee. While the problem is more noticeable in white coffee cups, all colours and types of coffee cups are susceptible to this problem. Cleaning stains properly does not have to mean using harsh chemicals or cleaning solutions that are difficult to find. With a little bit of ingenuity and elbow grease, coffee cup stains are a thing of the past.

The Causes of Coffee Stains

Coffee contains ingredients called tannins. Tannins stain porous surfaces, and they are very sticky, which makes them difficult to remove. Even though coffee cups appear to be smooth inside, there are microscopic grooves in the glaze that allow the tannins to adhere easily. Coffee cups used daily, or that are left to sit for long periods before rinsing, are more likely to develop coffee stains.

Removing Stains from Coffee Cups

Although harsh chemicals such as bleach remove stains from coffee cups and coffee plungers, there are many other options. Many of these methods involve products that are easy to source, and which many homeowners may already own.

Baking Soda

Rinse the mug, allow it to dry, and then sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda into the mug. Take a damp nylon scrubbing pad and work the baking soda into the stained areas of the mug. If necessary, rinse the scrubbing pad and tackle the stain again. This method works better if the mug is dry.

Denture Tablets

Denture tablets are designed for removing stains, and are perfect for cleaning ceramic cups. Simply drop two tablets into the cup and add some boiling water. Leave the cup to soak overnight for the best results.

Vinegar

Soaking a cup overnight in white vinegar removes stains. For quicker results, make a paste with salt and white vinegar, apply it to the cup, and allow it to stand for an hour. Finally, scrub the cup and rinse thoroughly. As an additional benefit, vinegar helps to remove lingering odours.

Preventing Stains on Coffee Cups

It is far preferable to prevent stains on coffee cups than to spend time fighting them. Although there may be more than one member of the family contributing to the problem, there are still some ways to compensate. Besides cleaning coffee cups immediately, regular rotation also helps.

Clean Coffee Cups Right Away

Sometimes the morning rush means that not all the breakfast dishes get cleaned. In that case, even a quick rinse while the coffee cup is still damp helps prevent coffee stains from forming. If there is time, a full cleaning with dish soap and warm water is the most effective way to avoid coffee stains.

Rotate Coffee Cups Regularly

When the same cup is used repeatedly, it is far more likely to develop coffee stains. This is the case even if the cup is cleaned regularly after using it. To combat this problem, try to use other coffee cups every few cups of coffee.
