I am sure you have heard the words ‘Cardio exercise’ before! It is actually a very important component of any exercise routine and weight loss program. But what is ‘Cardio’?  Cardiovascular exercise is any form of exercise that elevates or increases your heart rate by increasing your circulation and blood flow throughout your body.  There are a lot of ways you can incorporate Cardio exercise into your daily routine, continue reading for lots of ideas…

You can start off with just a few minutes a day and work your way up as you get fitter, any cardio exercise will help you on your path to achieve your fitness goals. There are SO many benefits of doing cardio exercise, here are just a few reasons why Cardio is so important to your fitness and why I will be talking more about Cardio in the future…

Cardio improves your fitness:
Cardio (or aerobic) exercise like power walking, jogging, swimming, riding, and rowing greatly improves your body’s ability to deliver oxygen to your muscles. It also helps your muscles become more efficient at using that oxygen.  The more you exercise your heart, the better and more efficient it becomes, which in turn reduces your risk of having a heart attack, but also increases your overall fitness, which also leads to weight loss….

Cardio helps with weight loss:
When you combine cardio exercise (the more intense the better), eating the right foods, and doing regular strength & conditioning training you’ll lose weight, it’s that simple!

Cardio helps reduce blood pressure:
When you improve your fitness you can reduce high blood pressure which is one of the major factors that contribute to heart attack and stroke. When your heart becomes stronger, your heart will pump more blood around your body, with less effort. If your heart is working less to pump, the pressure on your arteries will decrease, which will in turn lower your blood pressure. It will take approx 1-3 months of regular exercise to see your blood pressure lower once you start or increase your exercise regime.

Cardio can increase your levels of good HDL cholesterol:
The good cholesterol (HDL) removes deposits of bad cholesterol (LDL) from your blood and sends it to the liver to be excreted from your body. When you have an excess of bad LDL cholesterol, it blocks the flow of blood to your heart, which is where the risk of heart disease will increase. By improving your cardio fitness you boost the levels of HDL cholesterol in your body, and in turn reduce your risk of heart disease – but your whole body will become fitter, stronger while possibly losing weight as well.

Cardio helps build strong, healthy bones:
When you do weight bearing exercise like jogging you put your bones under stress. In response to this your body increases your bone mineral density to make your bones stronger – this is great for reducing the risks of developing osteoporosis.

Cardio boosts your immune system:
When you incorporate regular cardio exercise into your fitness program, you are stimulating the production of cells in your blood which help to fight off bugs (bacteria and viruses) which in turn helps build a strong immune system.
Cardio gives you the “feel-good” hormone:
Doing cardio exercise can lead to the release of “feel-good” hormones, otherwise known as “endorphins” – this is the chemical in the brain that produces a sense of happiness and wellbeing. As an off-shoot of this, cardio exercise can also help relieve stress, improve self-confidence, and self-esteem and just make you feel more energetic!

Cardio helps you sleep:
I bet you didn’t know doing cardio activity, especially in the morning, helps set your body clock so you are wide awake during the day and sleepy at night!

Cardio will increase your stamina & give you more energy:
During cardio exercises and shortly after you may feel tired but in the long term you will be increasing your stamina, reducing fatigue, and it will give you far more energy in the long run!

Don’t forget: eating right and doing conditioning and strength training is just as important as cardio! Doing all three of these will ensure you are as fit and as healthy as possible while making you tone up and lose weight as well. Bonuses all around really!
