The Adafruit VL53L0X breakout board has a so-called time of flight distance sensor. Time of Flight means that the distance is measured with the help of a very small laser and a sensor, in which the time until the laser beam arrives at the sensor is measured. In contrast to sonar or ultrasonic sensors, the distance with this sensor is not made over a large area, but centered at specific points.
