Anne of Green Gables is one of my favourite books and I consider this 1985 Canadian adaptation to be the gold standard of film adaptations. Covering all the major events of the first book over almost 3.5 hours, any changes from the book make sense for the transition to a different medium and to allow the story to flow. Anne, Gilbert, Marilla and Matthew are all played very well and the film really captures the spirit of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island and the book. My main complaint with the film is that Rachel Lynde's character isn't quite how I imagine her, but she is still a well played character.
