The four volumes of classic tunes from the American songbooks that Rod has produced are musically in the same class as those renditions by Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and the best of the other major performers who have produced versions of this canon of popular music. In fact, Rod's warmth of tone often means that he surpasses many who sang with a fine musicality, but less feeling. Importantly, he does this without overplaying the emotion (like for example Celine Dion) or the melodic histrionics so widespread nowadays, particularly in TV "talent" shows. The duets are mostly well chosen and sympathetic - Dolly Parton and Bette Midler work perfectly but Cher, who has not been able to sing in tune without substantial electronic help for decades now, is a misstep. Before hearing these albums I had enjoyed several of Rod Stewart's songs without ever being a fan, but this is a body of work which boosts him into the league of all-time great recording artists.
