Ashly Bryan's Puppets is an eye feast. The gorgeous photography begins to show one facet of this 92 year old artist's work. The poems are brillnt and response well with the attitude of these extraordinary sculptures. The poems are fun, and fabulous. A guilty party here is the publisher. By designating this book a 'Children's Book', they once again sabotage the depth of Bryan's quest and ability to communicate. Even the jacket cover mis-portrays Ashley Bryan as a puppeteer. He is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker largely overlooked by the art world. Search out his books: Yes - you will need to go to the children's section, but the reader will find that the subjects deeply contribute to the search for self esteem and the revelation of the depth of African American artistic history.

this is a book for children and imaginative adults who can see possibility of making puppets out of unlikely material washed up on the shores of the ocean .. it is not a book anyone can use for it shows the way to be wildly imaginative which is not everyones cup of tea.Logical people might find it intimidating to use who are grown up .It could be for most children tho and i would like to try it with them for i was an art teacher for many years and i think children many of them would have much fun .
