Much of the role-playing game genre is devoted to world-spanning quests to stop a great evil and protect the world from annihilation, but Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland is devoted to telling a much simpler story. This Sony PlayStation 3 video game tells the story of Rorona, a young woman thrust into taking over her teacher's shop when she leaves one day. Instead of being overwhelmed by the need to run the shop, Rorona steps up and tries to do her best to continue to fill the obligations and duties of the alchemy shop. Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland splits character progression along two tracks that measure both the capabilities of a character and her skill at alchemy. Perhaps more so than other members of its series, this Sony PlayStation 3 video game features alchemy as a significant plot point, as Rorona tries to meet and fill the orders. Meeting the various orders in this role-playing game can require questing for components of dangerous beasts or guarding in dungeons, so Rorona can acquire a variety of elixirs as she runs her shop. While the plot of Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland is not grand in scale, it is meant to draw players into the life of a character as opposed to the fate of the world.
