Briony Tallis, 13 years old and an aspiring writer, sees her older sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner at the fountain in front of the family estate she misinterprets what is happening thus setting into motion a series of misunderstandings and a childish pique that will have lasting repercussions for all of them. Robbie is the son of a family servant toward whom the family has always been kind. They paid for his time at Cambridge and now he plans on going to medical school. After the fountain incident, Briony reads a letter intended for Cecilia and concludes that Robbie is a deviant. When her cousin Lola is raped, she tells the police that it was Robbie she saw committing the deed when in fact it was a visitor to the estate. The storyline of Atonement is where this movie holds most of its impact. From horses being shot to a man hanging from a ferris wheel, the sequence is shown in all its glory. It really is a powerful moment, and probably the one scene that got me almost to tears, purely because of the singing in the background, it is shocking just how amazing this sequence truly is. "Atonement" is a perfect movie, superb performances, beautiful direction, a script and storyline that's great. A great interpretation of a wonderful novel.Read full review
Atonement - WOW! Great movie...I can't watch it again..Why? you ask? Go buy it, rent it, borrow it, see it and you will know! I compare it to The Titanic Movie (Dicaprio, Winslet) - tragic love story, I am the kind of person that saw the Titanic ONCE and could not watch it again, I feel the same about this movie - great movie, the chemistry between actors McAvoy and Knightly was spot on, but OMG, I can not watch that again...I am out of Kleenex!!! So, if you are that kind of person that saw the Titanic 257 times, than this is the movie for you, buy it! If you are like me and can not watch the Titanic again, rent Atonement or borrow it from someone and save your $20. Just make sure you have your Kleenex handy...
I'm certain there are endless other reviews who can better sum up this movie than anything I can do. I saw this movie one morning with not an ever-lovin' clue what it was about and enjoyed it completely. It's a fascinatingly compelling story about a young child who lashes out maliciously with dire consequences and the ending was truly a shocker. Wonderful story we should all be able to relate to. Fantastic. I can't offer enough superlatives.
