This smart car battery charger runs some good quality electronics that 'sense' your car or motorcycle battery's state. It then chooses an amperage to go ahead, although you can also choose the amperage yourself with it's buttons. It requires the battery to have some voltage/charge - 3V, I think - in order to either charge or 'rejuvenate' the battery. If you know that the battery is completely discharged and near dead, consider using a 'dumb' 2-amp charger that will have a 'razor' effect on such batteries, and then switch to this charger once the 'dumb' charger has done its job. In Australia, Arlec makes some very decently priced dumb chargers. Projecta makes smart chargers that can do the job of a dumb charger as well, but this particular model that I purchased does not - the more expensive models certainly to a fabulous job for any kind of battery. I already have an Arlec 2-amp dumb charger, and I was just after a decent smart charger that could 'top up' my car and motorcycle batteries -- the car battery had been sitting half baked due to short local trips with the lights, music and all that on, and the motorcycle hadn't been ridden for 2 months after I serviced it thanks to icy cold winds around this area. This Projecta does a great job - it's actually designed to be permanently connected to batteries in your car, truck or caravan and can do some 'smart' trickle-charging without over charging a battery. Although I have a charger already, this one is effective at rejuvenating and adjusting to my variety of batteries. I have standard lead acid, calcium and GEL batteries in my tractors, motorbikes and cars and it appears to do a great job on all of them. Very happy with the product and as it has already recovered a couple of batteries, it is worth the investment.
