David Tracey's book 'Beyond Literal Belief' proposes an alternative view of Jesus Christ and the Old Testament. Tracey argues that the 'orthodox' view of Christianity is largely based on various levels of a literal interpretation of the Bible. However, Tracey argues that the Bible (and other early documents of the era) is mainly written as metaphors. Like many ideas about Christianity the ideas are complex and require various degrees of speculation. Tracey's book is interesting, logical and worth reading. It provides a persuasive argument that the Jesus story makes more sense if the Bible and many other early documents are read as metaphors rather than literally. A book worth reading for people interested in Christianity but the ideas are complex and probably require a reasonable level of understanding of the Christian faith.Read full review
