Arvilla husband Joe has recently died during a trip to Borneo, and his ashes have just arrived at her home in Pocatello, ID. Though Joe had previously specified in his will that he would like his ashes scattered by his beloved wife, the well-intending Arvilla soon becomes locked in a heated battle of wills with Francine, Joe's well-to-do daughter from a previous marriage. Francine is determined to see her father laid to rest next to her mother in Santa Barbara, and she's threatened to sell the house that her father and Arvilla have lived in since marrying to ensure that she gets her way. A light comedy and sentiment and the somewhat slight story brought to life by the natural gifts of a trio of superb actors. The movie is definitely enjoyable but drags in the center.
This is a movie based on what might really happen in life...a fight between a recently widowed woman (Lange) and her adult step daughter. It makes you think about doing better planning for your death so that those left behind will know what you really want. Not an easy topic to talk about, but one that should be discussed. But what makes it worth watching is the fun that she and her two friends have along the way to drop off his ashes. Reminds me a little of Thelma & Louise. To me, Kathy Bates was the best of all of them. She gives her character such depth. It's more funny than sad...I didn't cry, just felt sorry for the widow. Good clean entertainment.

I had seen this on tv,so decided to buy it for my daughter. She had been to the scenic areas shown in the movie, and she is also a Mormon. It put the Mormon characters in a humorous, loveable light. Unfortunately, she did not embrace the story as much as I did. It was a love story, in that Jessica Lange was fighting against a stepdaughter to dispose of her husband's remains, but it was also very dark humor. My husband loved it for the scenery part. I recommend this as a "chic flick" and for Katy Bates/Jessica Lange fans!!
Interesting story of a woman and her friends transporting the husband's ashes across the country. Characters were engaging but most of the movie was predictable. Rate it "OK".
