Leonard Bernstein is one of my very favorite conductors. Almost everything he put his hands to was spectacular. The Vienna Philharmonic has long been one of the outstanding orchestras in the world. It goes without saying that Brahms was one of the greatest composers who ever lived. The collaboration of all these geniuses could not help to produce anything other than fantastic artistry. This CD is head and shoulders above any of the competition! The selections are superb. Brahms' Symphony No. 4 was at first received very coolly by the public and the prominent critics of the time, but over the years it has grown to become one of his most appreciated and admired works. The Tragic Overture has always been very popular with Brahms enthusiasts. The VPO musicians seem to bring their superb artistry to the fore in these performances, Lenny is his usual genius self, bringing out all the nuances of the melodies just as Brahms would have wished for. The sound is first rate, and the producers are to be complimented for their work. All in all, this is an outstanding, if a bit hard to find, disc, but it is well worth the search! You will certainly be as delighted with it as I am. Do not delay! I doubt that the CD will be available much longer. Get it while it is such a bargain. you won't be sorry.Read full review
While I wouldn't want this to be my only recording of the Brahms 4th, it's a wonderful perform-ance with fabulous sound. Some people may not care for Bernstein's phrasing in the second movement, but I find it compelling.
