I have been looking for a Callanetics book for quite a few years. Its hard to find because it is out of print. I wanted it, because I know that it is an exercise program that can work and has worked for me in the past. This book stresses slow easy movements that lessen the chance of injuries while exercising. And yet the slow easy movements are very effective. When I am doing the exercises regularly, I definitely have more energy and it doesn't take long for me to see changes in my body. I would recommend using the book along with one of her DVD's so that you can use the correct form. Even though the book has many, many photos the form can still be elusive.
I love this book as much as I did 25 years ago! I knew it would be the best and safest way to regain strength and a more pleasing appearance. I have not found it necessary to use the DVD to understand the exercises, in fact, I would rather have the book, if I had to chose. I was concerned that I would not be able to find a copy, since the book is out of print. I am disappointed with the paperback version, the cover is already tearing off, but that is a minor issue, compared to the benefits of the program. After all, I have tape! I haven't felt the need to buy other exercise books. When I'm exercising, it's Callanetics. I took a quick look at the "new and improved version" and felt it changed the original too much. As one who has seen my fair share and then some more of the latest, the greatest, the best selling, the etc. etc. etc. of exercise books and fitness routines, I can say this one is at the top. Other than yoga, possibly, I'd say this is the greatest thing that's ever happened to fitness and exercise. First, it REALLY WORKS. Secondly, IT WORKS REALLY FAST. The first time I started with Callanetics was when I was in my 30s. Everything seemed to work faster and better then, however, I was still amazed at how quickly my body (25lbs overweight) responded and started toning and shaping up to a place it had never been before. I was ecstatic! Time passed and I drifted away from it all. Book put aside. As I aged I realized I needed to do something...I remembered the book, repurchased it and once again, Callanetics did not fail me. I promise you, if you stick with this a week or two, follow the routine and do as it says, in "no more" than two weeks you will be in awe of how quickly your body can respond and firm up in ways you will not believe. Reading her story (at the beginning) you can tell it's 80s fare, but who cares, it's still a fun and quite interesting read. What a life this woman lived! It's the closest thing to a fountain of youth and as for me now, this is THE ultimate fitness program.Read full review
