Close to Shore is a non-fiction book, the events of which were used by Benchley to write Jaws. This is a true account of the shark attacks of 1916 along the Jersey shore. In addition to the accounts of the attacks, a very vivid picture of life in 1916 emerges. There are some astounding facts that are both strange and humerous...how long a bathing costume was required at the time, appropriate colors to be worn, the numbers of bathers flocking to the shore to escape city heat etc. There is some very good science, also, explaining shark motivation and actions. While this is non-fiction, it reads like a novel. This is a good book club selection since there are alot of areas open to discussion. Close to Shore is a great read; best to read it on shore!
This book may not be for everyone because you can get the basic information on the internet, but I enjoy reading about historic events in more detail. I was also interested in the connection to Peter Benchly's book JAWS.
