I just picked one of these reels up and hadn't had a chance to test drive mine yet, but I did borrow a buddies set up with this reel earlier in the year, and even managed to catch a tiger musky on it. I won't lie, I'm a fan of the Lexa 300s, and have switched over to them from the Curado's. They're great value for the price. I'll fish the guts out of them for four or five years, and then just replace them. As for the 8 to 1 version, its great for throwing jerkbaits, gliders, and swimbaits.... anything that you need a lot of line pick up for. I wouldn't recommend it for bucktails any bigger than a Mepps Musky Killer (#5 size blade). If you go much bigger in blade size, they really pull hard with the high speed retrieve, and will wear you down fast. But for any bait that you need to move fast that doesn't have a lot of resistance to it, this reel is a good option. Fred K. in Utah.Read full review

Got this per good reviews I've seen from various sources. Using it for surf fishing (mostly from sandy beaches, lures with 30# braid line, typically ~100 yards casting range) and seem to be decently built but not impressed over all. Main (design) issue is, the line guide gets disengaged from spool gear (thus stay fixed) when casting and this compromise the casting distance and more importantly make it more susceptible to backlash, IMO. Adjusting the guide position to the middle of spool before each cast helps but that can be a pain. Short casts (i.e. boat) use should be ok but if you want distance, use with caution. Also, the design seem to make it a sand magnet and requires more frequent maintenance compare to Abu, Penn, etc...

The Lexa 300 HD is light and speed is ideal for long float drift fishing. I love it. Only issue is it jammed internally after only 2 days of fishing... Not sure what part(s) failed, but Daiwa honored the warranty; repaired and returned it at no cost. Its been working perfectly since. For those who've been using daiwa reels over the years, it doesn't appear to be of the same ruggedness/toughness as their PMF 53-57 series.

I have not used it yet, but if it's like my Lexa 400, then it's a gem!

A tad smaller than I thought compared with the Lexa 400, but still very smooth and strong drag rating for it's size
