I have been a linguist for more than 40 years. German was the first foreign language I learned but I could still use help with idiomatic speech, expressions or just speaking and understanding ordinary, everyday German as is actually spoken rather than how the textbooks say it should be spoken. This book is the answer to my prayers. Actually I had a copy, loaned it to a German friend and never got it back so I bought another. Can't be without it. Surely wish I had the equivalent type of book for Vietnamese (my second foreign language) back in the 1960s. Often I could understand the words but not the meaning. With a book like this for guidance one understands not only the words and the meaning but also those subtle nuances that make understanding complete. If you are a half-way serious student of a language a book from this series will be a big help. In the case of German, this book is a great deal of help. It even helps with some of those naughty words and expressions to pointedly absent from textbooks but so common in everyday speech.Read full review
