Dieser kriegsbedingten Zasur folgte durch die Charta der Vereinten Nationen von 1945 nicht nur das Ende der in Verruf geratenen Form kolonialer Herrschaftsausubung, sondern auch die Neuordnung der Weltpolitik. Der Begriff Dekolonisation impliziert die nachkoloniale Staatsbildung. Die 1887 von der franzosischen Kolonialmacht zusammengefasste Union Indochiise sollte sich zwar als rohstoffreiche, aber auch anspruchsvolle Kolonie erweisen. So lie sich die indigene Bevolkerung aufgrund der heterogenen Religiositat von Konfuzianismus, Buddhismus und Daoismus von der katholischen Missionierung Frankreichs nur allzu schwer begeistern. Das Prestigeobjekt und Juwel in der Krone des franzosischen kolonialen Empires verlangte folglich einen hohen Tribut und sollte sich infolge struktureller Defizite und des Zweiten Weltkrieges zu einem Schandfleck franzosischer Kolonialgeschichte entwickeln.
