I've had and played threw alot of gtr processor and pre amps. I know all the hype these days is all about the Kemper profiler amp and the Fractal Audio Axe-fx 11 preamp which are great and sound amazing! But not everyone has that kind of $$$. The Digitech gsp1101 may seem somewhat obsolete to some but it is still a great sounding unit especially for the price! And it is easy to use and configure to any setup. Weather your running it in front of your amp, effects loop, using the gsp1101 preamp threw your amps EFX Rtrn or a P.A. I've always liked digitech and have had many of their smaller gtr processors mainly for practicing so I'm familiar with there layout. Even if you've never used a digitech it is still very easy to use and navigate threw to get great tones very quickly. I absolutely love it and in my opinion it is def one of the best units out there! And the Control 2 foot controler , which is a must have with this unit, is very simple to hook up. You just connect it to the GSP1101 with the ethernet cable and your ready to go! No midi programming is needed. It does have midi capabilities as well if you decide to go that route. Bottom line is its a great unit and you won't find a better unit in that price range.Read full review

I have only had this product for a week but so far I am loving it. I bought this product because I wanted an "affordable" multi effects unit that could/would route wah/compressor/distortion-od in front of my preamp & then delays/chorus/reverbs/etc after my preamp. This product fits the bill. I have my Randall RM4 preamp in the loop of the GSP. The benefit to this is I can also select to have the loop off & use the GSP's amp sims & then my preamp is no longer in the signal path. This can be programmed per patch. Patch 1 preamp no amp sim, patch 2 amp sim & no preamp, etc. IT is possible to have both the amp sim & the preamp a tthe same time. So far I have not liked the tone of that combination. Likes: Besides the above mentioned loop & preamp options it also has a USB port so you can connect to your PC for updates, edit patches (in Xedit), and record. Editing patches and storing them is easy. Just make sure you select store patch to store it to the GSP. Clicking save only saves it to your computer. I have not tried recording yet, so I don't know how easy/hard it is, any issues/quirks, or how it sounds direct. The reverbs/delays/chorus/etc carry over for a short period of time after patch changes instead of abruptly cutting off. With the Control 2 you can have the option to select given sounds/tones per patch in 10 button mode or if you prefer the tap dance of a stomp boxes, you can create a "do it all patch" and turn certain effects on/off in 5 button mode. Either is cool. so far I have been using 5 patch mode & suprisingly I like it. I only used 10 button mode with my Rocktron stuff previously. Dislikes: The CAT5 connection seems flimsy on the GSP & on the Control 2 pedal. Plus anyone who works in telecommunications knows those plastic clips on the connectors are easy to break, so be careful with these. The next couple of things may be user error kind of things, so take them with a grain of salt. You cannot alter effects order, or at least the manual does not say how & I have not figured out how to do this. Also I have not been able to program the volume pedal function to work like a traditional volume pedal before the amp sims or preamp. No matter how I've set it up, it just reduces/increases overall volume but does not clean up the preamp or amp sims. I really want to get this figured out so I can get rid of floor pedals other than the Control 2. The amp sims are dull, fuzzy, & bass heavy out of the box. With some tweaking they get better but they still lack what my tube preamp delivers. Compared to other products I have tried, the effects are on par with the Rocktron Xpression, Intellifex, Boss GT10. It is very easy to use out of the box. Except for the amp sims the tones from the effects are very useable without tweaking.Read full review
This is a great unit. It only alters my tone to the extent of the effect wanted. This preamp/effects unit has all the right routing options that no other unit offers in one box. Lets you place the effect before your amp or in the effects loopor both while also sending the tone striaght to the board with cabinet emulation. One great feature is you can swap your preamp tone for a amp model tone that is in the unit. I use a Splawn modded marshall(single channel) and I can get a fender twin type clean using the amp models that are in the GSP1101. All from one single channel amp, Its worth its price just for that feature(your amp must have an effects loop to do this). Check out the manual at DigiTechs website to see all the features!!!!.
The Digi-Tech GSP 1101 is (in my opinion) a poor man's answer to what I've seen a lot of pros do lately; that is use more than one amp during a performance. If you search the internet for the rig rundowns of the pros you'll see a lot of them use multiple amps. Since I don't have the money, the road crew,(or the talent for that matter) of the pros, this is the next best way to get the sounds of multiple amps on stage. Also, when used with the Controller 2, you effectively have the same type of midi foot controller that the pros also use to switch between multiple amps, effects, speaker cabinets, etc. Overall this is a great product, it is fairly easy and fairly intuitive to use. Creating and saving new sounds is pretty easy. Within minutes of plugging it in, I was able to create new sounds with different combinations of amps, effects, speaker cabinets, etc. If you're the kind of player that needs the versatility of many different sounds and can't afford to have all the amps, effects and speaker cabinets that the pros use, then the GSP 1101 is the next best thing.Read full review
The unit is great. It comes in a single rack space, is light weight and has an internal power supply. The tone is out of this world. If you upgrade it witht he patch from must be beta it becomes even better. Includes some of the best models ever( the 5150 is so cool and heavy ) I have used it direct in live situations and the tone through the p.a. is just what you would hope for. The effects do not dissaoint either. Multi tap delay with or with out ducking great compression and effects pedal models. a seriously great phaser and you wqould swear you were stuck in the 80's with the chorusing it provides. It was good right into my guitar head but I am using it on it's own with a power amp and it just blows everything else away. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
